A story I illustrated for IEEE Spectrum Magazine has been recognized with a Grand Neal Award for Best Single Article, a top honour in business-to-business editorial publications.

A Shocking Truth [PDF] exposed the design, engineering and maintenance problems that commonly cause automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to fail. My contribution was a half-page cutaway line illustration revealing the fatal flaws of the device.

Homeowner’s Energy Handbook

Last summer I worked with Storey Publishing to produce 226 instructional illustrations for The Homeowner’s Energy Handbook: Your Guide to Getting Off the Grid. Topics include doing a home energy audit, insulating and increasing the efficiency of your home, monitoring your energy usage, solar hot water heating, solar, wind & hydro electricity generation, biodiesel, wood gass, bio gas and much more.

Electriphobia Institute

I worked with Secret Location on a series of satirical instructional-style animations about electriphobia, the fear of the electric car, for the fictitious Electriphobia Institute. The campaign and website is to promote the all-electric Mitsubishi i-MiEV.

World Cup Stadium

As the world’s first major sports stadium that is net-zero energy and LEED-platinum, Brazil’s new Estádio Nacional de Brasília is as green as the grass on the pitch. The stadium’s sprawling white roof reflects sunlight to keep it cool, is coated with titanium dioxide which captures greenhouse gasses, and rimmed with a 2.5-megawatt solar array to fulfill the stadium’s power needs. More than half of most stadiums’ carbon emissions come from auto transportation to and from events, so a bicycle valet service will be offered during the 2014 World Cup.

CubeSats

Cube satellites are tiny, inexpensive research probes that piggyback into orbit on NASA or commercial space flights for a variety of projects by smaller research groups and universities. The satellites undergo extensive vibration and shock testing to ensure they can withstand the takeoff forces, and not jeopardize the mission. For Hemispheres magazine. Ocean Rowboat

This 30-foot ocean rowboat—specially-equipped with a wind turbine, photovoltaic array, water desalination unit, and communication, navigation & data collection equipment—carried a team of four former college rowers 3,200 miles across the Atlantic ocean from the United States to England.
