If you are using linked EPS files, and want the linked files to look nicer on the artboard preview:
Go to Preferences > File Handling & Clipboard, and uncheck "Use Low Resolution Proxy for Linked EPS".
This seems to work on all files placed after changing the setting, any previously linked EPS files ...

It definitely works perfectly in MS Word 2010 on PC, and in 2008 & 2011 on Mac.
I've not yet tested the latest PC version, but plan on installing it at some point next week.
I'll post back whether it works okay or not

Personally, if I have a number of separate objects that may require updates, I usually save them all as separate Illustrator files.
These are then "placed" into the main drawing, ensuring that the Link box is checked and that the Crop is set to "art".

I have found that using the EPS file format tends to yield the best results for embedding any line art within MS Word.
I've done test prints using PNG, TIFF & WMF/EMF as well, but find that EPS seems to produce the nicest looking prints that respect the line weights.

Drawing in all tangent lines indicates the shape of the rising surface well, but does not look clean enough.
Removing all of the tangent lines looks nice and clean, but the surface looks flat.
