Relocating

I'm in the midst of relocating from Vancouver to my hometown of Toronto. Updates from me will be slow over the next few weeks (though I am enjoying the spirited debates in the comments ;) Maybe I'll turn it into a post on the topic... If my computer gets delivered in pieces today, it'll make for a r...

Re: Most Complex Illustration

@Steven Finding adequate reference for promo/personal projects is always the biggest hurdle. Great work!

Re: Making a video tutorial

I used this one for my last video http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/

Worked out pretty well. Nothing to install, just position the browser window over your work area.

Re: Most Complex Illustration

Great work, everyone!

During college I wanted to see how far I could go on a drawing. I was privy to all the reference I could ask for on an ALRV, a Canadian-made streetcar. I never finished, but here are some screencaps. The artboard is 24"x12" and the strokes are 0.125pt.

Re: 3D software for illustration / visualisation

Davvi tipped me off about photoreal renderer for SketchUp that I've been meaning to try.

It's called SU Podium and goes for about $200 http://www.suplugins.com/

Re: Another new feature in Illustrator CS5...

I did not know about that, thanks for the tip Mike.

Previously you'd have to use the scissors tool wherever you want intersecting lines to end. The Shape Builder tool makes this so much easier!

Re: What is the average salary of a technical Illustrator

I may have exaggerated ;) My gross income (before expenses, taxes, etc) has been somewhere in the 'Specialized Illustrators' range for the last two years. @Don: Checked out your site. Lots of nice work! The rule of thumb I've heard for freelancers is that you should be making at least double the hou...

Re: What is the average salary of a technical Illustrator

On the topic of (in-house) salaries for illustrators, my 2008 edition of the GAG Handbook has this to say: Illustration: $30,750 to $43,000 for one to three years; $40,500 to $57,250 for 3 or more years. Conceptualizes, paints and draws new images used in a variety of matierals and publications. Spe...

Re: Critique Request

Responsibilities vary, but if you have type on your work in your portfolio, you want it to be good (or at least not distracting).

Most art directors are designers. Designers love type.
