This was a fun one. I used a lot of the burn and dodge tool to give it a more hand done older feel but went kind of crazy on the realism.

This one was difficult there was limited reference on the internal details and I had to construct it from scratch if anyone is interested:

Sure is quiet in here! A very rare cover spot for a 2D Tech Artist:

Hey Jim,
It looks pretty quiet on this site these days.
I love your illustration of the Triumph. May I ask you about your process? What do you start with when you do a 3D illustration? Do you start with a CAD model, you you freehand in Illustrator?
I am wondering if I should chase the dragon of becoming more a a full-time technical illustrator, but until now I have stayed within the world of using Illustrator - maybe with SolidWorks Composer models as a starting point. Up until now that is has served me well for the "installation guide" type of illustrations I'm asked to do.
It's tempting, but I also realize there are only so many clients for what you bring to the table.
Cheers!
Matt

Hi Matt,
Thanks for checking out my work on the Vetter Triumph it was from a photo from the AMA Museum. I only work in Illustrator and then paint everything in Photoshop, old school. I do not use any 3D although I should have learned it I have just been too busy.... I still see a need for good Vector work.
